My Pride and Joy: House Plants

Hello!

Today, I hope to show you the delight of owning a house plant. We will first take a journey back in time to hear where this story begins. I had been wanting a plant for a long time but my room gets no direct sunlight and I was scared that my happy plants would die. For many months, I debated back and forth to myself, trying to devise a solution to my problem. I could get a plant that likes full shade? Though, full shade plants look exactly like what covers the ground of my yard. On a run to HomeDepot to get a seed starting greenhouse box for the roses that I was planting, I stumbled upon their houseplant section and knew I was not going to leave without at least one plant. I was right, because I actually left with three plants and a hanging terrarium globe.

I was so excited to finally have plants that I could nuture and watch grow.  The three plants I purchased were all rather different. I got a Haworthia Mirabilis Badia, a Golden Sedum and a Fittonia.  The first two are succulents while the last one is a full shade leafy plant. I have curated a list of reasons why plants are the perfect addition to your home.

       Reason 1:

Plants are (generally) very low maintenance.  You water them maybe a couple times a week, you put them somewhere with sun and you watch them grow. Its fun to watch them sprout new leaves and grow bigger with very little help from you.  Plants are very self sufficient which is nice because you don't have to get a house sitter when you leave town like you do with pets.
He isn't doing so great 😅 Despite being desert plants, succulents do need more water in hot, dry conditions.

      Reason 2:

Studies show that having house plants helps improve your well being and increase attentiveness according to this article by Psychology Today.  There are many factors as to why having house plants could improve your well being. Having a plant gives you a sense of responsibility and pride without exhausting you.  You have kept the plant alive which gives you a sense of accomplishment, but you didn't necessarily feel overwhelmed by the "chores" of caring for it. It is very humbling to watch a house plant grow. It teaches us all a lesson that while the plant only uses sunlight, the nutrients from the dirt in which it is planted and the water we give it, the plant still grows into something beautiful. It does not need much to thrive and it reminds us that all we really need to grow is food, water and nurture.

This is a pretty short post so I figured I would publish it mid-week so that y'all could have a longer post for the official weekly publishing. I hope you enjoyed reading about the joy of house plants and how they can help improve your life.  I really love my three little plants and am saving up a fund to buy more of them to place around my room. I think I will be going for more full shade plants this time around because despite how much I love my lil' baby succulents, they just don't get enough sun without me putting them outside. It would be a hassle to move 10 planters inside and outside every day.😂 You can follow my plant journey on my instagram, @makeupbycococat.
