What I Keep in My School Care Bag + Tips and Tricks

Hello!

We are about a month into school and I wanted to share my backpack essentials with you! If you are no longer in school and have moved into a new phase in your life, this bag is essentially an everyday emergency kit. It is full of essential items for beauties on the go! Let's start with the list.

Dry Shampoo is one of those staple beauty bag items for people with thin hair. Even if you don't have oily hair, it's good to keep a bottle of dry shampoo with you because it can add a little volume and texture to your hair if it's a little flat that day. I make my own dry shampoo because I figured why buy it if I can make it, right? Find the tutorial for my homemade dry shampoo on my YouTube channel.

Tinted lip balm is a must have in any beauty bag because it can give your face some color while also replacing the moisture in your lips. Other uses for linted lip balm include using it as a glossy eye shadow or cheek tint in a pinch. I use this Guava Butter Lip and Cheek Tint from Seraphine Botanicals. It is triple threat product that you can get for $24 on the Seraphine Botanicals website. They are a Cruelty-Free, Vegan, Fair-Trade cosmetics brand, that I absolutely love! They have tons of products to choose from and I would definitely recommend their brand to someone looking for cruelty-free makeup, skin care and hair care that works just as well as any non cruelty-free brand.

Clear mascara is a great thing to keep with you because it can be used to calm unruly eyebrows and stick down fly aways as well as be your back up mascara in case you forgot to apply some this morning........not that I have ever left the house with my makeup entirely done except for my mascara. πŸ˜…This thing is a life saver. I use this e.l.f. Cosmetics Clear Brow and Lash Gel. I use the brow and lash side interchangeably because there isn't any real difference between the formulas. You can get it from the link above for $2.

Now, depending on how much hair you have, as well as what texture it is, you may not need a brush. I have medium thickness, pin straight hair so I need a brush to keep my hair from looking like a rat's nest. If you need to redo your pony tail during to day or you jump in the car on a rushed morning and need to your wild do, this is your tool. I bought a little flip brush with a mirror a few years ago at the Dollar Store, and it is still going strong. Your brush doesn't have to be amazing, just enough to get you through a rough hair day.

Bobby pins are the hair tool version of your best friend. They fix every problem. Bobby pins aren't just for pinning stray hairs back, oh no. They can be used as makeshift zippers on your backpack or pencil pouch, they can be used to pin your clothes during an awkward wardrobe malfunction, they function as bookmarks, pick locks like a charm. You want a jar of bobby pins in the apocalypse. Take them as your one tool on an episode of Survivor. Bobby pins.

The next best hair tools behind bobby pins are hair ties. Hair ties are great because they can be used to put your hair up in a bun, in a pony tail, thread through your jean loop to lengthen a too-tight waistband, and use the thin ones to lengthen a necklace by threading it through a loop and attaching the two sides of the band to the clasp.

Oil-blotting sheets are great for those days where your skin upset and has decided to be super oily. Whip out an oil blotting sheet to dab the oil off your face. The other thing that doubles as an oil blotting sheet is a paper toilet cover. You know those things above most toilets that resembles a rather large tissues box attached to the wall? Yeah, those. Take one of those out and tear off a medium sized piece to blot your face with. Take the left over cover, fold it up, and keep it on your beauty bag to use when you need it.

Schools are often times dry. The air seems to just suck the moisture straight out of your hands. During flu season when you are constantly washing your hands, the antibacterial soap they have in the bathrooms will also make your hands dry and even make them crack. Keep lotion in your beauty bag to moisturize your hands throughout the week (or day even.) One of the best moisturizers you can use is actually just some coconut oil. Keep a little coconut oil in your bag to moisture you hands, body and face as well as bring some life back to dry ends. Coconut oil for the win!

ALWAYS have Aleve or Advil in a small pill capsule in your beauty bag as well. Your heels are making your feet scream? That pesky migraine strikes in the middle of an important meeting?  Grab your water bottle from your bag and take that Aleve. Always having some basic medications with you is a good idea. Other meds worth carrying are Tums, gas pills, and allergy relief.

Band-aids. You don't realize how many paper cuts you actually get until you have to suffer with them exposed to the elements. You do a lot of walking between classes at school, and if you are wearing new shoes, chances are you will get a blister. Keeping Band-aids with you is good for all those little cuts and scrapes that come with just existing.

Okay, so technically this isn't a beauty essential, but you need to keep it with you. Always keep some extra snacks in your bag. If you pack a lunch that ends up not being enough, or you forget to eat breakfast, having some protein bars or nuts in your bag is a great idea. That way you don't have to spend your day feeling hungry, and possibly hangry. Nothing gets done on an empty stomach.

Now that you have a loose list of what to keep in your little care bag, time to talk about the tips and tricks for the school year to help keep you looking and feeling great! There are just those little things that can make all the difference.

Keeping your nails in nice shape is just a little way to make your life feel a bit more put together. It may not seem like much but having clean, well kept nails really makes a difference! Whenever you write or type something, you see your nails. When you hand things to people, you see your nails. Take a little time each week, Sunday is usually best, to just give your nails some TLC. Mix one fourth cup of sugar with just enough water to make a paste and scrub your hands with it. Weekly exfoliation is a super important part of keeping your hands feeling soft. After rinsing the sugar off your hands, use a dime sized drop of coconut oil to help re-moisturize your hands. The last step is to take either your nails or a cuticle pusher, and gently press your cuticles back. This helps to keep you from getting those pesky and painful tears on the edges of your fingers. Finish there or add a coat of clear or colorful polish! Sometimes having your favorite nail color on can really give you a boost during a rough week. Trim your nails as needed. (Note: Make sure to use a small bit of nail polish remover or alcohol to wipe the coconut oil off your nails before painting them. The oil will mess up the polish. πŸ˜‰)

The next tip is to relatively plan your outfits for the week. Have a general idea what you are going to wear each day before the week starts so that you can check to make sure that all the parts of the outfits are clean and ready to use. Write down the outfit ideas in the notes section of your phone, on a piece of paper pinned to the wall, or on a reminders board in your room! The night before, lay out the entire outfit including shoes and accessories so in the morning all you have to do is put your clothes on and go! This also goes for makeup. If you do your makeup for school, then have your look pretty much figured out and pick out the palette the night before. That way you waste no time looking for your makeup in the morning. This way you can sleep in instead of scrambling around the house in the morning looking for everything and trying to figure out what you are going to wear.

Classrooms (and offices) can get a little chilly. Invest in a compact but warm little jacket or sweater to fold and keep in your backpack or bag. That way you can focus and get stuff done instead of shivering and thinking about how cold you are constantly. Extra points if your jacket doubles as a rain coat!

Always keep an extra outfit with you. You can keep it in your car or locker (or backpack if you have room 😬.) You may end up never needing it, but its better to be safe than sorry. It would be very sad if you spilled coffee all over yourself and had to wear a wet, sticky shirt for the rest of the day. Any number of things could happen to your clothes throughout the day. That spare outfit might come in handy!

Do not forget to bring water. Water is arguably the most important part of keeping you looking and feeling your best. If water is not immediately accessible to you, you aren't likely to drink enough of it, especially if it means you have to leave class to walk to the water fountain all the way across the school. Invest in a water bottle that you like and then make sure to fill it the night before. After you fill the bottle, put it next to (or in) your backpack so that during the morning rush you don't forget it. the standard water bottle size should be finished by lunch and then refilled to last you the rest of the day.
